Growth hormone (GH), also known as somatotropin, plays a vital role in the development of animals. GH is a peptide hormone secreted by the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland. It stimulates growth in all tissues of the body, including bone. Growth hormone is encoded by the GH1 gene in dogs. Research showed that variants in GH1 is associated with small body size and a dental anomaly in dogs.
