Target Information
MMP-20 is tooth-specific and is expressed by cells of different developmental origins, including epithelial ameloblasts and mesenchymal odontoblasts. Its primary function in enamel is to cleave enamel matrix proteins at specific cleavage sites. Matrix Metalloproteinase-20 is encoded by the MMP20 gene in pigs. It plays a crucial role in tooth development, specifically in the formation of enamel. MMP20 is thought to be necessary for the removal of proteins from the enamel matrix of developing teeth. It is expressed by ameloblasts at the secretory stage.
