Target Information
Serum procollagen type I N-propeptide (PINP) is recognized as the primary marker for bone formation in osteoporosis. The procollagen I molecule is produced by osteoblasts. During bone formation, the pro-peptide extensions located at the amino-terminal (PINP) and carboxy-terminal (PICP) of the procollagen molecule are removed and released into the bloodstream as the collagen molecule is deposited to create the osteoid matrix. PINP is often used in conjunction with another marker of bone formation, PICP (type I collagen carboxy-terminal peptide), for a more comprehensive assessment of bone metabolic activity.
