5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), also known as serotonin, is a monoamine neurotransmitter. It plays diverse roles in the body, including mood and emotions, sleep regulation, appetite control, cognition and memory, pain perception, and gastrointestinal function. It is produced in the brainstem's raphe nuclei, enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract, and other tissues. 5-HT contracts the goat middle cerebral artery by acting mainly on 5-HT2 receptors.
