Target Information

Bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP) is the bone-specific isoform of alkaline phosphatase. This glycoprotein, located on the surface of osteoblasts, mirrors the biosynthetic activity of these bone-forming cells. BAP is recognized as a sensitive and reliable marker of bone metabolism. Bone alkaline phosphatase plays an important role in sheep primarily by regulating bone development, promoting mineralization, maintaining calcium-phosphorus homeostasis, and possibly other physiological functions. In sheep, bone alkaline phosphatase plays an important role in the early stages of skeletal development. Studies have shown that bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (sALP) levels in the serum of newborn lambs can be significantly increased by maternal treatment with β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyric acid (HMB) given during gestation and perinatally.
