Aspartate aminotransferase (AST), also known as aspartate transferase, is an enzyme found in various tissues throughout the body, including the liver, heart, brain, pancreas, kidneys, and muscles. It is involved in amino acid metabolism. Aspartate aminotransferase is encoded by the chicken GOT1 gene. Chicken liver mitochondrial aspartate aminotransferase was found to be located in the intermembrane space and bound to the inner mitochondrial membrane.
