Target Information

Hemoglobin (Hb) is the protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen to tissues. It also helps transport carbon dioxide (a waste product) from tissues back to the lungs for exhalation. Hemoglobin is composed of four protein subunits, each containing an iron molecule. The iron allows hemoglobin to bind and release oxygen efficiently. Adult chicken hemoglobin is heterogeneous and contains two major components, AI and AII.
