Target Information

In rabbits, the MB gene encodes for myoglobin, a monomeric heme protein primarily responsible for storing oxygen and facilitating its diffusion within muscle tissues. It binds oxygen reversibly through a pentacoordinated heme iron, ensuring the efficient release of oxygen during periods of increased demand. Beyond its oxygen-binding capacity, myoglobin exhibits nitrite reductase activity, allowing it to regulate the production of bioactive nitric oxide, depending on the oxidative conditions of tissues and cells. Rabbit myoglobin is able to cross-react with antisera from different species (e.g., whale, horse, dog, etc.). This suggests that rabbit myoglobin is conserved at antigenic sites and environmental residues, and this conservation may be related to its important function in the rabbit.
