Target Information

Oxytocin is a natural hormone that controls key aspects of the female and male reproductive systems, including labour, birth and lactation. It is a peptide hormone and neuropeptide normally produced in the hypothalamus and released by the posterior pituitary gland. The main advantage of injecting a low dose of oxytocin daily appears to be that such a low dose only induces parturition in mares carrying a mature foetus and ready to foal.
