Target Information
Gastric inhibitory polypeptide (GIP), also known as glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide or glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide, serves as a weak inhibitor of gastric acid secretion. Its primary role, as an incretin, is to stimulate insulin secretion. Alongside glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), GIP belongs to a class of molecules known as incretins, which enhance insulin release upon oral food intake. Interestingly, in skate (Leucoraja erinacea), it can also function as a chloride secretagogue.
