Substance P (SP) is an undecapeptide and a neuropeptide within the tachykinin family, functioning as both a neurotransmitter and a neuromodulator. Its receptor, neurokinin type 1, is found on the cytoplasmic membranes of various cell types, including neurons, glial cells, capillary and lymphatic endothelial cells, fibroblasts, stem cells, and white blood cells across a wide range of tissues and organs. SP can also cause vasodilation, leading to increased blood flow. Guinea pigs are important models for studying SP's role in respiratory diseases and pain signaling.
