Target Information
Adiponectin is a protein primarily secreted by white adipose tissue and encoded by the Adipo Q gene. This protein hormone plays a role in regulating various metabolic processes such as glucose regulation and fatty acid oxidation. In hamsters, lower plasma cholesterol and triglyceride levels have been associated with decreased plasma leptin and increased adiponectin levels. In hamster models of insulin resistance, decreased adiponectin levels accompany skeletal muscle lipid accumulation and hyperglycemia. Adiponectin also modulates adipogenesis, counteracting visceral fat expansion under metabolic stress.
