Target Information
The relaxin family peptide hormones are part of the insulin superfamily and comprise seven peptides that share high structural similarity but low sequence similarity. In females, relaxin is produced by the ovarian corpus luteum, breast, and during pregnancy, by the placenta, chorion, and decidua. In males, it is produced in the prostate. Relatin in rabbits mainly plays a role by regulating the relaxation of the uterus and pelvic ligaments, affecting hormone levels during pregnancy, participating in embryo implantation, and inhibiting platelet aggregation. In a rabbit model, increased levels of relaxin and decreased levels of RXFP1 following a subarachnoid hemorrhage may contribute to the development of cerebral vasospasm.
