Target Information
Superoxide dismutase [Cu-Zn] neutralizes radicals typically generated within cells that are toxic to biological systems. It is encoded by the SOD1 gene. It is a cytosolic, dimeric, carbohydrate-free molecule found ubiquitously, and is part of a family of isoenzymes involved in scavenging superoxide anions. The function of SOD1 in rabbits is mainly reflected in its role as a neuroprotective factor and a potential disease model gene. SOD1 can be genetically manipulated in rabbits to be utilized in the study of neurodegenerative diseases, with particular potential in exploring the pathogenesis and therapeutic strategies of ALS.
