Target Information
Bovine pepsinogen A (PGA) is a precursor of the enzyme pepsin found in the gastric mucosa of cattle. It is a polypeptide chain that includes a signal peptide and is longer at the N-terminus compared to pepsin. PGA is activated by hydrochloric acid in the stomach to become pepsin, which is essential for the digestion of proteins. It plays a significant role in the normal digestion of food and is also important in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. PGA is predominantly found in most mammals and is safer for drug treatment as an alternative to porcine pepsinogen for those with allergies to pork. It is mainly extracted from the pig stomach, but research is ongoing to improve its production through microbial fermentation for broader applications in medicine and diagnostics.
