Target Information
In felines, leptin (LEP) is a hormone synthesized and secreted by adipose tissue, primarily regulating appetite, energy metabolism, and fat storage. Its plasma concentration correlates positively with body fat content, making it a useful marker for assessing obesity. Leptin exerts its biological functions by activating intracellular signaling pathways, such as STAT3 phosphorylation. In cats, leptin mRNA is mainly expressed in adipose tissue and not detected in other tissues like liver, heart, or kidneys. Additionally, leptin levels may be affected by neutering, as it can increase the risk of obesity due to reduced energy expenditure and increased appetite.
