In felines, peripherin-2 (PRPH2) is a retina-specific tetraspanin protein located in the outer segment (OS) rims of rod and cone photoreceptors. It plays a crucial role in the morphogenesis of OS disc membranes, maintaining their stability and curvature. PRPH2 mutations can lead to retinal degenerative diseases like retinitis pigmentosa and macular dystrophy, affecting rod or cone function.
