Target Information
Feline Uromodulin (UMOD) is a kidney-specific glycoprotein secreted by the epithelial cells lining the thick ascending limb (TAL) of the loop of Henle. It is the most abundant protein in normal urine and plays a crucial role in various renal functions. UMOD acts as a constitutive inhibitor of calcium crystallization in renal fluids, providing protection against urinary tract infections and kidney stones. It forms filaments that antagonize the adhesion of uropathogens, thereby facilitating their clearance through urination. Additionally, UMOD has been implicated in the regulation of water and salt metabolism and may have immunosuppressive properties. In cats, UMOD is also associated with renal function and blood pressure regulation.
