Target Information

H5N8 is a subtype of the influenza A virus that is highly lethal to wild birds and poultry. It is generally not associated with human infections. The hemagglutinin (HA) protein serves as the primary target for the host's immune system. For the avian influenza virus to be infectious, the HA precursor (HA0) must be cleaved into HA1 and HA2 subunits. The HA1 subunit contains subtype-specific neutralizing epitopes, while the HA2 subunit has broad neutralizing epitopes. These characteristics make HA1 and HA2 promising candidates for developing both subtype-specific and universal influenza vaccines.
