Target Information
Leptospira interrogans LipL32 is the major outer membrane protein of pathogenic leptospires, with a molecular weight of about 32kDa. Studies have shown that LipL32 is primarily or exclusively a subsurface protein, rather than a surface-exposed protein. Although LipL32 is highly expressed during infection, it is not required for the pathogenicity of leptospires, and immunization with LipL32 in animal models has failed to induce protective responses. Nevertheless, LipL32 is highly reactive in the serum of infected animals, suggesting it may play a role in leptospirosis. The function of LipL32 is not yet fully understood, but its high conservation and high expression during infection suggest it may have an important function in pathogenic Leptospira interrogans.
