Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is encoded by the IL6 gene in pigs. This cytokine is produced by monocytes and macrophages in response to other inflammatory mediators such as IL-1 and tumor necrosis factor-beta (TNF-β). IL-6 plays a pivotal role as a proinflammatory cytokine in pigs.
