Target Information
Swine mucin-2 is a major component of the intestinal mucus layer, covering the apical surface of the intestinal epithelial cells and primarily secreted by goblet cells. It plays important roles in lubricating the intestine, providing adhesion sites for intestinal antimicrobial proteins and commensal bacteria, and defending against pathogens and harmful substances in the gut. In swine, research on Mucin-2 helps to understand its role in intestinal diseases, providing a basis for developing new therapeutic strategies. For example, Mucin-2 has been shown to exhibit antiviral activity against porcine enteric coronaviruses in a porcine intestinal organoid model, with its sialylation potentially playing a key role in blocking coronavirus infection.
