Reuterin, also known as 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde, is an organic compound characterized by its bifunctional nature, possessing both hydroxy and aldehyde groups. The compound's name is derived from the bacteria Lactobacillus reuteri, which biosynthetically produces reuterin from glycerol. Reuterin functions as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent, acting as a bacteriocin.
