Target Information

Bilirubin (BR) is a red-orange compound produced in the normal catabolic pathway that breaks down heme in vertebrates. Bilirubin is produced when hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen, is broken down. Hyperbilirubinemia occurred in many diseases of cattle and in most instances is related to a failure of the liver to remove unconjugated bilirubin from the serum rather than to a failure of the liver to excrete conjugated bilirubin.
