Target Information
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), also known as GABA, is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mature mammalian central nervous system. Its main role is to reduce neuronal excitability throughout the nervous system. It lessens a nerve cell's ability to receive, create, or send chemical messages to other nerve cells. GABA works together with another neurotransmitter, serotonin. In bovine chromaffin cells in primary culture, the presence of GABA in the cytosol suggests that this molecule may be an effector of chromaffin cell activity in addition to modulating catecholamine secretion.
