Target Information

Structural maintenance of chromosomes protein 3 is encoded by the SMC3 gene in cattle. Cohesin is composed of two Structural Maintenance of Chromosomes proteins, SMC1 and SMC3, and a kleisin protein like RAD21. Cohesin complex plays a crucial role in sister chromatid cohesion during the cell cycle. The cohesin complex forms a large proteinaceous ring that traps sister chromatids. At anaphase, it is cleaved, allowing proper chromosome segregation.
