Target Information
Superoxide dismutase 1 is produced by the SOD1 gene in canines. The SOD1 protein exists as a homodimer, characterized by a beta barrel (β-barrel) structure. Each subunit features an intramolecular disulfide bond and a binuclear copper/zinc site. This copper/zinc site is crucial for the enzyme's function, as it facilitates the conversion of superoxide into hydrogen peroxide and dioxygen through a disproportionation reaction. In canines, functional studies of SOD1 have focused on its antioxidant and neuroprotective effects. It has been shown that the expression level of SOD1 in canines is closely related to health status, especially in neurological disorders.
