Target Information
Homovanillic acid (HVA) is a major catecholamine metabolite formed by the sequential action of monoamine oxidase and catechol-O-methyltransferase on dopamine. HVA is used as a reagent to detect oxidative enzymes. It is associated with dopamine levels in the brain. HVA presence supports a diagnosis of neuroblastoma and malignant pheochromocytoma. Fasting plasma levels of HVA are higher in females than in males, regardless of hormonal changes or gender transition.
