Target Information
D-dimer is a protein dimer that results from the degradation of fibrin, a process which produces fibrin degradation products (FDPs). This small protein fragment appears in the bloodstream after a blood clot is broken down through fibrinolysis. Named for its composition, it consists of two D fragments of the fibrin protein, connected by a cross-link. Assessing the concentration of D-dimer in the plasma is helpful in diagnosing systemic thrombosis. The function of D-dimer in cats is mainly associated with markers of thrombosis, which has been clearly demonstrated especially in studies of cats with cardiac hypertrophy (HCM).
