Target Information
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) plays a pivotal role in the renin-angiotensin system (RAS), which is crucial for controlling blood pressure by managing the body's fluid volume. This enzyme transforms the hormone angiotensin I into the active vasoconstrictor angiotensin II. It achieves this by hydrolyzing peptides, removing a dipeptide from their C-terminus. Specifically, ACE converts the inactive decapeptide angiotensin I into the octapeptide angiotensin II through the removal of the dipeptide His-Leu. Guinea pigs are used in cardiovascular research, and ACE's role in regulating blood pressure is investigated. Studies have examined the effects of ACE inhibitors on guinea pig cardiovascular function.
