Target Information
Cathepsin D is a lysosomal aspartyl protease that consists of a protein dimer made up of disulfide-linked heavy and light chains, both originating from a single protein precursor. This aspartic endo-protease is widely present in lysosomes. In studies involving transfected baby hamster kidney cells, human cathepsin D was primarily found in the surrounding medium, whereas hamster cathepsin D was mainly located within the cells. Research indicates that estrogen induces Cathepsin D, which may play a role in renal tubular cell damage, a precursor to tumor formation.
