Target Information

Canine parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a key regulator of calcium homeostasis, targeting the kidney, gastrointestinal tract, and bone. It is secreted in response to decreased extracellular calcium concentrations and acts to increase renal excretion of phosphorus, reabsorption of calcium, and synthesis of calcitriol, which in turn stimulates intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate. PTH also increases osteoclast numbers and function, leading to bone resorption and the mobilization of calcium and phosphorus into the extracellular fluid. This hormone plays a critical role in maintaining normal levels of extracellular calcium, which is essential for various physiological functions in dogs, including muscle contraction, nerve conduction, and cellular metabolism.
