Target Information

Cell division cycle 2 (CDC2), also known as cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (CDK1), is a protein kinase that plays a central role in the regulation of cell cycle progression. It is activated in response to the binding of cyclin proteins, particularly cyclin B, leading to the initiation of mitosis. The CDC2-cyclin B complex phosphorylates a variety of substrates, including proteins involved in chromosome condensation, nuclear envelope breakdown, and spindle assembly. As a key player in cell division, CDC2 is subject to stringent regulation to ensure the accuracy of cell cycle events. Its activity is modulated by various mechanisms, including cyclin-dependent activation, inhibitory phosphorylation, and degradation of cyclins. The proper functioning of CDC2 is essential for maintaining genomic stability and preventing the development of aneuploid cells, which are often associated with cancer.
