Target Information
Porcine ATG7 autophagy related 7 homolog (pATG7) is a protein that plays a pivotal role in the autophagy process in pigs. Autophagy is a cellular mechanism through which cells degrade and recycle their own components, including damaged organelles and misfolded proteins, to maintain cellular homeostasis and survival. pATG7 is an E1-like enzyme that activates microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3), a key protein involved in the formation of autophagosomes, the double-membrane vesicles that engulf cellular material targeted for degradation. The activation of LC3 by pATG7 is essential for the elongation of the autophagosome membrane, a critical step in the autophagy pathway.
