Target Information
Porcine fumarylacetoacetase (FAH) is a critical enzyme involved in the tyrosine metabolism pathway, specifically catalyzing the conversion of fumarylacetoacetate into fumarate and acetoacetate. This metabolic process is essential for the detoxification of intermediate metabolites in tyrosine catabolism. In pigs, as in humans, a deficiency in FAH activity can lead to the accumulation of toxic metabolites, such as fumarylacetoacetate, which is associated with hereditary tyrosinemia type 1 (HT1). This disease can result in severe liver damage, cirrhosis, and an increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma if left untreated.
