Target Information

Porcine interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine expressed by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells in pigs. It is synthesized in response to inflammatory stimuli as an inactive 31 kDa pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol. Activation of inflammasomes, which respond to pathogens and stress signals, is required for the cleavage of pro-IL-1β into the active 17 kDa protein. IL-1β signals through two receptors, IL-1RI and IL-1RII, and its activity can be moderated by the IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). This cytokine plays a crucial role in innate immunity, triggering the production of other pro-inflammatory cytokines and initiating acute-phase responses to infection and injury. Elevated levels of IL-1β are associated with chronic inflammatory conditions, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target.
