Target Information

Esterases are a broad category of enzymes found throughout living organisms. Their key function is to break down molecules called esters into their constituent parts. Esterases act as hydrolases, using water to cleave the ester bond in an ester molecule. This reaction splits the ester into an acid and an alcohol. Study found that esterase activity scaled to whole tissue was high in cornea and iris-ciliary body and low in aqueous humor and retinal pigment epithelium in both porcine and albino rabbit ocular tissues.
