Target Information
Sheep interferon alpha (IFN-α) is a type I interferon with broad-spectrum antiviral and immunomodulatory functions. It is produced by various immune cells in response to viral infections and acts by binding to the interferon alpha/beta receptor (IFNAR), which is widely expressed on the surface of most cell types. Once activated, IFN-α induces the expression of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) that enhance cellular antiviral defenses, including the inhibition of viral replication and the activation of immune cells. In sheep, IFN-α plays a crucial role in combating viral infections such as peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV), a significant pathogen affecting small ruminants.
