Target Information
In rabbits, the INS gene encodes for insulin. This hormone helps reduce blood glucose levels by enhancing cell permeability to monosaccharides, amino acids, and fatty acids. Additionally, insulin speeds up glycolysis, the pentose phosphate pathway, and glycogen synthesis in the liver. Insulin has a key role in regulating the utilization of different energy substrates by the rabbit heart. In acute pathology, insulin improves organ function and reduces mortality by maintaining normal blood glucose levels, but its non-glucose-dependent effects are less useful.
