Target Information

Pulmonary surfactant-associated proteins enhance alveolar stability by reducing the surface tension at the air-liquid interface within the peripheral air spaces. Specifically, pulmonary surfactant-associated protein B raises the collapse pressure of palmitic acid to almost 70 millinewtons per meter. In rabbits, this protein is encoded by the SFTPB gene. In mice, SFTPB deficiency leads to severe lung problems, so in rabbits, SFTPB may also be involved in regulating the stability and diffusion capacity of active phospholipids on the alveolar surface, which affects lung health.
