In the veterinary field, Borreliella burgdorferi variable large protein (VlsE) is an important surface lipoprotein that primarily aids in immune evasion through antigenic variation mechanisms. The variable regions of VlsE prevent antibodies from binding, thus protecting the bacterium from immune attacks. Additionally, VlsE plays a significant role in persistent infections of Lyme disease and is a key target for vaccine development.
