Target Information
Canine MMP13 protein (MMP13), also known as collagenase 3, is a matrix metalloproteinase enzyme that plays a significant role in the degradation of extracellular matrix (ECM) components, particularly type II collagen, in dogs. This protein is essential for maintaining tissue homeostasis through the controlled breakdown of the ECM. However, an overexpression or unregulated activity of MMP13 can lead to the pathogenesis of various diseases, most notably osteoarthritis (OA). In the context of OA, MMP13 is a primary catabolic factor involved in cartilage degradation, as it can cleave type II collagen at multiple sites, leading to the loss of cartilage integrity and function.
