Target Information
Equine serum amyloid A protein (SAA1) is a sensitive acute-phase reactant primarily produced in the liver in response to inflammation, infection, or tissue injury in horses. SAA1 is a precursor to amyloid fibrils and is involved in various physiological and pathological reactions, including endotoxin detoxification, cholesterol metabolism, and immune response modulation. It is known to chemoattract various leukocyte subtypes and can induce cytokine production upon activation of G protein-coupled receptors like FPRL1/FPR2. SAA1 also plays a role in the body's response to sterile injury and chronic inflammation, contributing to the reestablishment of homeostasis. The protein's concentration can rise dramatically during inflammation, making it a valuable biomarker for monitoring inflammatory conditions in horses.
