Target Information

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is transmitted by mosquitoes and can lead to reproductive losses in pigs and encephalitis in horses, with very rare occurrences in other species. JEV virions possess a positive-sense single-stranded RNA (+ssRNA) genome, approximately 11 kilobases in length, that encodes three structural proteins (capsid, membrane/premembrane, and envelope) and seven non-structural proteins (NS1, NS2A, NS2B, NS3, NS4A, NS4B, and NS5). The NS1 protein, an early indicator of infection, can be targeted for the development of drugs, vaccines, and monoclonal antibodies aimed at inhibiting JEV pathogenesis.
