Target Information

Erythropoietin (EPO), also known as erythropoetin, haematopoietin, or haemopoietin, is a glycoprotein cytokine primarily secreted by the kidneys in response to cellular hypoxia. Erythropoietin is encoded by the EPO gene in sheep. EPO is a glycoprotein hormone that is essential for normal red blood cell production. The primary site of EPO production in the adult is the kidney, most likely in interstitial cells near the proximal tubules in the deep renal cortex.
