Target Information
The CLDN18 gene encodes a protein known as Claudin-18 (CLDN18) in pigs. It belongs to the claudin group of proteins, which form tight junction strands in epithelial cells. CLDN18 plays a major role in the tight junction-specific obliteration of the intercellular space through calcium-independent cell-adhesion activity. CLDN18 has two isoforms, A1 and A2. Claudins-1, -3, -4, -5, and -18 are classified as tightening claudins. They function by tightening the paracellular cleft of intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) through changes in the distribution and arrangement of charged amino acids, thus preventing pore formation.
