Target Information

The outer capsid protein VP4 of Rotavirus A is a key structural protein responsible for viral attachment to host cell receptors and is crucial for viral entry. VP4 can be cleaved into VP5 and VP8 subunits by trypsin, which are involved in viral adsorption and invasion, respectively. In veterinary medicine, VP4 is an important target for vaccine development, as it induces neutralizing antibodies that provide protective immunity to animals. Additionally, VP4 functions as a hemagglutinin, binding to glycoproteins on the host cell surface to facilitate viral attachment and entry. Thus, VP4 plays a significant role in both the infection mechanism and vaccine development for rotavirus.
