Target Information

West Nile virus (WNV) is an arthropod-borne virus belonging to the Japanese encephalitis antigenic complex within the Flaviviridae family. Its natural transmission cycle involves mosquitoes and birds, while humans and other mammals serve as incidental hosts. The virus encodes two envelope proteins: premembrane (prM) and envelope (E). During viral entry, the E protein binds to an as-yet unidentified cell surface receptor(s) and is then internalized into endosomes. There, under mildly acidic conditions, the E protein undergoes conformational changes, facilitating the fusion of the viral and cellular membranes.
