Target Information
Borreliella burgdorferi outer surface protein C (ospC) is a critical lipoprotein involved in the early stages of infection. It plays a significant role in the transmission of the bacterium from ticks to hosts and helps the bacterium evade the host's immune system by inhibiting phagocytosis by macrophages. In veterinary medicine, OspC is used as a target for developing vaccines that can prevent the establishment of infection in animals. These vaccines induce antibodies that bind to OspC, blocking its function and thus preventing the bacterium from successfully infecting the host. Additionally, OspC is used in diagnostic tests to detect antibodies in animals that have been exposed to the bacterium, aiding in the early detection and management of Lyme disease.
