Target Information
Calcitonin is a hormone produced by the parafollicular cells (also known as C-cells) in the thyroid gland. Calcitonin is encoded by the CALCA gene in pigs. Calcitonin is produced through tissue-specific processing of calcitonin mRNA. It opposes the actions of parathyroid hormone (PTH), which increases blood calcium levels. It is found throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, mainly in sensory afferent and central neurons. Calcitonin has various biological effects, including vasodilation.
